Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Arkansas

Williston Bates, was born in Pennsylvania 31 August 1830 of Dutch and Swedish decent, he moved with his parents to Daylight, Tennessee in 1836. The family moved to Birdell community, near Pocahontas in 1859. He married his childhood sweetheart, Nancy Tennessee Noblin, whose parents had moved there a few years before. (Does this mean the Noblin family lived in Tennessee also?)

Williston enlisted 8 July 1862 at Pocahontas, Arkansas by Cap't Besboar for duration of the war. Served in Shaver's Regiment, Arkansas Infantry, also known as 91st Regiment, Arkansas Infantry and 98th Regiment, Arkansas Infantry. He was a private in company E. In February 1863 he was in a wagonmaster regiment. By February of 1864 he was detailed as teamster at Brigade Headquarters, ordered by Gen. Tappan. He was a prisoner of war, surrendering on 11 May 1865 by Brig. Gen. M. Jeff Thompson, C.S.A. to Maj. Gen. C. M. Dodge, U.S.A. Commanding Department of Missouri. Paroled at Jacksonport, Arkansas 5 June 1865, at this time he was 29, blue eyes, dark hair, fair complexion, and 5 feet 8 inches tall.

Nancy and Williston are the parents of 13 children, including 2 sets of twins. Nancy died soon after the birth of their thirteenth child. Williston was the father of 16 children, 3 by his second marriage to Jane Bennett Bryant, widow of Tom Bryant. (Some say Williston was the father of 21 children, please help me find the other 5.)
